Circularity is more than a sustainability buzzword—it’s a mindset that reimagines waste as a resource and redesigns systems to avoid waste in the first place. In our company, on a mission to reduce enteric methane emissions at scale, this mindset is embedded across operations, from infrastructure reuse to waste tracking to staff culture. Through a design philosophy known as “Circular by Design,” CH4 Global is finding real-world, repeatable ways to embed responsible material management into everyday practices.
This blog explores how we are bringing circularity to life, sharing early lessons, evolving best practices, and why the process itself is as important as the outcome.
What Does “Circular by Design” Mean?
Circular design flips the traditional “take-make-dispose” model into a loop where outputs are reused as inputs, extending material lifecycles and reducing consumption.

CH4 Global embraces this philosophy through a structured sustainability framework, including a dedicated pillar on responsible material management. But sustainability doesn’t live in a silo.
Circularity principles influence everything from facility buildouts to procurement practices to how teams talk about everyday materials like nitrile gloves and pipette trays. For example, in transport operations, reusable tubs with lids are used to move seaweed between facilities, reducing single-use plastics and waste.
Building Systems for Repeatable Circularity
We are still in the early stages of implementing circular design across all projects, but we are laying the foundation in a very intentional way. One key effort is the development of a standardized waste audit toolkit. This toolkit helps staff at every site assess and measure their material streams, a necessary first step in identifying opportunities for diversion and aversion.
You can’t fix what you don’t measure, and waste doesn’t exist unless it’s being tracked. By assessing waste based on actual contents—not just dumpster size or assumptions—our teams can gain a more accurate picture of material flow and infrastructure needs.
In the early stages of EcoPark construction, we recycled and reused disused assets on-site rather than discarding them, both to recover valuable materials for future construction and simply because it was the responsible choice.
The goal? Make circularity a repeatable system, not a one-off achievement.
Why Circularity Starts with Questions
Sustainability isn’t a checkbox. It’s a journey of continuous learning, and it starts with asking questions:
- Can this material be reused?
- Is there a more sustainable option upstream?
- What happens to it at end-of-life in our specific region?
In some cases, the answer might surprise you. For example, biodegradable gloves sound like a great idea. But the additives that make them break down faster can also accelerate the creation of microplastics. And if the local composting infrastructure can’t handle those gloves properly, you’ve just swapped one problem for another.
CH4 Global’s approach is to “stay curious.” If a solution doesn’t make sense today, it may in the future. The important thing is to stay informed and connected to what’s changing upstream and downstream in each waste stream. Similarly, sourcing CO₂ for seaweed cultivation is guided by proximity and responsible sourcing, such as capturing emissions from nearby power plants to reduce transport and environmental impact.
Waste Diversion vs. Waste Aversion
Much of the public sustainability conversation focuses on recycling and diversion: keeping materials out of landfill. But CH4 Global also emphasizes “aversion,” or preventing waste from being created in the first place.
This might mean designing equipment for reuse, choosing materials with longer lifespans, or adopting lab practices that minimize packaging waste. A great example? Staff at CH4 Global manually refill pipette tip trays in Australia and New Zealand, reducing lab plastic waste simply by reusing trays that would otherwise be single-use in U.S. operations.
Other day-to-day waste-reduction practices include using reusable containers for ice during summer operations and actively exploring bulk sourcing to reduce packaging plastics.
Often, these practices emerge organically from staff initiative. And that’s part of the magic: creating a culture where everyone sees themselves as part of the sustainability process.
From Demolition Waste to Engineered Fill
At CH4 Global’s Louth Bay facility, circular design took literal form through the repurposing of 5,000 tonnes of demolition concrete. Instead of sending this material to landfill, it was reused as engineered fill for site development.
This decision not only diverted significant waste, it eliminated the need for new material, reducing emissions, cutting truck traffic, and lowering overall project costs. It's a reminder that circularity doesn’t always require high-tech solutions; sometimes, it’s about seeing value in what’s already there.
Other materials, like HDPE piping and abalone containers, were either repurposed locally or given away to community members, saving on recycling costs and transport emissions while benefiting others.
Measuring What Matters
One of CH4 Global’s current priorities is developing key performance indicators (KPIs) for waste and material management. Right now, much of the work is focused on building the baseline. Teams are literally sorting through trash, taking photos, and labeling material types to understand what’s coming in and going out.
This process isn’t just about numbers—it’s about visibility. Many employees are already doing “quiet” sustainability work. By documenting those actions, CH4 Global can better celebrate progress and build a case for scaling it across other facilities.
Eventually, KPIs may include:
- Diversion rate by material type
- Upstream material avoidance
- Reuse ratios for equipment and infrastructure
- Emissions impact of procurement decisions
- Staff engagement and sustainability submissions
- Upstream/supplier packaging transparency
The Culture Side of Circularity
A recurring theme is that circularity isn’t just technical—it’s cultural. CH4 Global has worked to make conversations about waste feel approachable and creative. From town halls to email messages, employees are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas, and explore solutions without needing to be “experts.”
This shift is starting to pay off. More staff are proactively asking about packaging materials, biodegradable products, or potential reuse systems.
One KPI that’s hard to quantify—but incredibly meaningful—is this increase in curiosity and collaboration. When circularity becomes part of daily dialogue, innovation follows. Staff engagement is further supported by seeing tangible outcomes, such as passing along hundreds of surplus abalone containers and plastic sand filters for community reuse.
Challenges and Tradeoffs
Despite these successes, implementing circular systems isn’t always simple…or perfectly “green.” Sometimes, the most sustainable choice in theory doesn’t make sense in practice. For example, transporting a niche recyclable material across hundreds of kilometers may result in more emissions than local landfill disposal.
These tradeoffs can be hard to accept. But CH4 Global is committed to making data-informed decisions, not just symbolic ones. It’s about balance. Circularity needs to be rightsized for the moment.
Even seemingly rigid sustainability frameworks need flexibility. Rigid labels like “compostable” or “biodegradable” can backfire if they’re not backed by matching infrastructure. Instead of chasing perfection, we’re building for progress.
Scalable Solutions and Modular Design
CH4 Global’s circularity efforts aren’t limited to one site. Much of the infrastructure design, especially in our modular EcoPark model, is built with reuse in mind. This modularity makes it easier to apply lessons from one site—like Louth Bay—to future facilities. Reused concrete, repurposed abalone tanks, and adaptable waste protocols all demonstrate that circular systems can scale with the right planning. Many of these practices, such as reusable transport containers and water reuse potential, are likely to become even more effective at larger scale.
Rolling Out a Circular Design Process: Best Practices
Turning circularity from vision into action means building habits and systems. CH4 Global’s rollout strategy includes the following key steps, adapted to local infrastructure, regulatory context, and project needs:
- Establish a Waste Baseline
Use audits to understand what types of materials are being used and discarded. Classify by source (lab, packaging, operational), material type, and quantity. Photos, sorting exercises, and staff interviews add valuable insight. - Map Regional Waste Infrastructure
Recycling and composting capabilities vary widely by region. Research what’s truly recyclable, what gets downcycled, and what ends up in landfill—even if labeled “green.” Evaluate the emissions impact of long-distance material transport. - Build a Material Management Toolkit
Standardize how audits are conducted, how bins are labeled, and how teams are trained. Include visual guides, reporting templates, and FAQ sheets. Update these tools as materials and infrastructure evolve. - Incorporate Waste Questions into Procurement
Before ordering new materials, ask:- Can we avoid this purchase?
- Can we reuse something we already have?
- If not, what’s the lowest-impact option available?
Track procurement choices with sustainability metrics in mind, not just cost. This includes exploring more sustainable concrete, energy-efficient machinery, and water collection systems for future sites.
- Celebrate Small Wins
Not every change will be transformative. But small actions—like manually refilling pipette trays or reusing concrete—add up. Highlight these efforts in team meetings, internal channels, and onboarding. - Encourage Cross-Site Collaboration
What works in one region might inspire solutions elsewhere. Create opportunities for teams to share learnings, test tools, and compare infrastructure differences. - Integrate Feedback Loops
Make sustainability a living conversation. Use employee emails, internal surveys, and project retrospectives to gather ideas and refine practices. Empower teams to lead experiments and track outcomes.
Foresight, Systems Thinking, and the Future of Circularity
We draw inspiration from long-standing systems models, such as those described in Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu, where Aboriginal communities managed fishery ponds with upstream and downstream relationships in mind. This ethos of responsibility and interdependence is central to how CH4 Global defines circularity, grounded in relationship, responsibility, and interdependence.
Going forward, we are exploring:
- Reuse partnerships with nearby industries
- Infrastructure audits to identify future reuse and recycling potential
- New supplier standards that prioritize sustainable inputs
- Technology platforms to track and analyze material flow
Other potential initiatives include bulk sourcing to reduce packaging, reusing water for cleaning, evaluating solar beyond the South Australian grid, or electric machinery to further reduce our operational footprint.
Final Thoughts: Circularity is an Ongoing Conversation
Circular by Design isn’t a destination—it’s a mindset. For CH4 Global, it’s about asking better questions, connecting dots across departments, and building systems that evolve with the science. Not every material can be diverted. Not every solution is available yet. But every thoughtful decision brings us one step closer.
And that journey is worth celebrating.
