Annual awards program recognizes global innovation in agricultural & food technologies
Henderson, Nevada, USA – August 21, 2024: CH4 Global, a climate tech company on a mission to slash livestock methane emissions at gigaton scale by using a seaweed-based cattle feed supplement, was today announced as the recipient of “AgTech Sustainability Solution of the Year” in the fifth annual AgTech Breakthrough Awards.
CH4 Global's Methane Tamer™ is a feed supplement derived from Asparagopsis seaweed, scientifically proven to reduce enteric methane emissions from cattle by up to 90%. Methane Tamer™ is specifically formulated to ensure consistent, stable levels of methane-reducing compounds, and to make it easy for farmers to incorporate it in cattle feed.
To enable CH4 Global to rapidly scale production and distribution of Methane Tamer™ with multiple partners to accelerate its impact, the company is currently building a commercial-scale facility for cultivating Asparagopsis seaweed. Dubbed an "EcoPark," this pioneering facility in South Australia will grow Asparagopsis in large-scale saltwater ponds and process it into Methane Tamer™. The EcoPark will eventually expand CH4 Global's capacity to supply up to 100,000 head of cattle daily while serving as a model for future facilities worldwide, designed to meet surging demand for sustainable livestock solutions.
“Thank you to AgTech Breakthrough for this amazing recognition of our potentially transformative impact on the global food and ag industry. By harnessing the power of a humble seaweed, we’re offering a win-win solution that allows farmers to significantly reduce their methane emissions while improving their financial resilience,” said CH4 Global CEO Steve Meller. “In a world urgently seeking ways to mitigate climate change, we’ve set out to prove that what's good for the planet can also be good for our farmers. We’ll continue our relentless pursuit of innovation, scalability, and cost-effectiveness to show exactly what's possible in the realm of climate-smart agriculture.”
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with more than 80 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. With livestock farming, particularly cattle and sheep production, responsible for at least 30% of human-driven methane emissions globally, solutions like the one offered by CH4 Global are critical in the fight against climate change.
The mission of the annual AgTech Breakthrough Awards program is to conduct the industry’s most comprehensive analysis and evaluation of agricultural and food technology categories, including Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based agricultural technologies, farm management, indoor farming, food quality, data analytics and many more. This year's program attracted thousands of nominations from over 15 different countries throughout the world.
“CH4 Global's Methane Tamer™ represents a monumental breakthrough in the quest for sustainable livestock production. Methane is over 80 times more potent than CO2 in trapping heat in the atmosphere over a 20-year period. Agriculture is the largest human-made source of methane emissions with cows being the biggest contributors. However, farmers need support to ensure the ability to sustainably feed our planet,” said Bryan Vaughn, Managing Director, AgTech Breakthrough. “By tackling one of agriculture's most significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions, CH4 Global is empowering farmers to dramatically shrink their carbon footprint while also simultaneously boosting their bottom line. We’re so pleased to award them with ‘AgTech Sustainability Solution of the Year!’”
